(KMDL-FM) Does it seem as if we've had more than our share of product recalls in the first half of this year? I mean, Louisiana has seen a recall of boudin and cracklins, and in Texas, I am sure somewhere someone has had to recall some barbecue. But those are worst-case scenarios, right?

I'm not sure whether it's the fact that we're producing and selling more defective products or if we're just doing a better job of making you aware of those potential problems before you purchase them, or get injured using them.

The two main government entities that are responsible for keeping us safe from defective foods, drugs, medicines, and unsafe products are the Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The FDA's mission is to protect and promote public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of: foods, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The mission of the CPSC is to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with consumer products.

The current recall we're informing you about comes to us from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and it involves a product that many ladies use in the kitchen, and many men might use in their workshops or to do outside chores.

What Does the Recalled Product Look Like?

The product that is being recalled is pictured below. It is the Dorel Cosco 2-step Kitchen Stepper. As you can see, it's a folding step stool with two steps and a safety bar attached to the back across the top platform.

The issue with the product, according to the CPSC, is that the safety bar has either detached or broken in more than 30 cases. In at least two of those cases, the product's users were forced to seek medical treatment for head injuries.

What Do I Do If I Have a Recalled Dorel Step Stool?

According to estimates, it is believed that some 302,000 of these step stool units have been sold across Louisiana, Texas, and the rest of the United States and Canada. The item is sold at Walmart, Target, and Amazon. It is also available at other retailers, either in-store or online.

Consumers wishing to repair their step stool may contact Dorel Home Furnishings for a free repair kit. To request a repair kit, you may do that here.
