High School sports in Louisiana are some of the most dynamic and diverse competitions any sports fan could ever want to watch. Take for example the recently concluded LHSAA Championships in football. Just about every game in the finals went down the final few ticks on the clock at the Caesers' Superdome in New Orleans.

High School Sports are often called "the last class of the day". And to the untrained eye, what's happening at Vermilion Catholic High School, Carencro High School, Bastrop High School, and even McDonogh 35 when student-athletes gather for football, basketball, soccer, baseball, or softball practice might not look like it, but they are still learning.

Sure, they are learning how their coach wants them to play the game. But they are also learning responsibility, teamwork, cooperation, critical thinking, and a host of other real-world skills that will serve them long beyond their playing days.

The LHSAA, Louisiana High School Athletic Association is the governing body for high school sports and that group of coaches, administrators, and educators is always looking for new ways to get more kids involved in "the last class of the day".

Perhaps the LHSAA should only looks a few miles east for what could become the next great girl's sport in high school. The MHSAA has recently approved and sanctioned a new sport for girls in Mississippi. It's not that the sport is new, it's the fact that they will be playing sanctioned games in high school, that's the new part.

What's the sport?

It's Flag Football. Yeah, the same flag football that NFL Players will participate in during "Pro Bowl Games" or whatever they are calling that post-season money grab by the NFL.

And speaking of the NFL, the New Orleans Saints of the NFL are taking a huge initiative in launching the sport not only in Mississippi but in Louisiana too. The Saints have officially unveiled Saints Girls High School Flag Football. There are already several schools on board with the idea.

The majority of the participating schools are in the New Orleans area but the hope is the sport will be given statewide sanctioned status by the LHSAA. It would make sense if they did.

As we mentioned the MHSAA is already on board as well as 13 other states across the country. And, the Summer Olympics of 2028 will feature Flag Football as well. It's all the fun and finesse of football without the brutal collisions and fake flopping by Kansas City quarterbacks.
