The world famous Apollo Theater of Harlem is partnering with Lafayette, LA to create a unique dance performance to the music of legendary soul singer James Brown. "James Brown: Get On the Good Foot — A Celebration in Dance." is set to premiere on October 22 at the Apollo before embarking on a nationwide tour.

Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel stopped by “Mornings with Ken and Bernie” for his weekly “Lafayette Live” to discuss Lafayette's involvement with the legendary theater and why they chose Lafayette.

The City-Parish President explained that the partnership was established in part because of certain tax breaks available to entertainment industry productions willing to make their base Louisiana. The Apollo Theater group will be doing all their rehearsals and preparations for the James Brown tour here in Louisiana. These preparations will include an October 17 launch performances at Lafayette's Heymann Performing Arts Center, though the performance won't officially be labeled as the show's "premiere".

Durel is extremely proud of the city's partnership with the production, as it is a major coup for Lafayette's growing film and arts industry.

To have something like the Apollo recognize the artistry we have in Lafayette kind of verifies the level of credibility we have. To have them promoting Lafayette is a level of credibility I as a mayor could never have.

The Apollo production will make Lafayette their home for a number of weeks while preparing the touring show, but their time spent in the city won't be all work and no play, explained Durel.

They do more than just rehearse. They also contribute. They'll do some things for school children. There will be workshops for people who are looking to break into the industry.
