Despite his arrest on federal charges and rumors of other less than admirable behavior during his time in office former Governor Edwin Edwards is still one of Louisiana's most beloved political figures.

The former Governor, now 89 years old, was hospitalized with pneumonia. His wife Trina said in comments reported by the Louisiana Radio Network that a bout with pneumonia is turning into an annual event for the well-known icon. It seems that the past few years Edwards has had to deal with the malady almost every Winter.

But today he's starting to do much better. He's been pretty sick the last couple of days but they finally figured out what it was.

The prognosis for a full recovery appears to be very positive according to the comments that Mrs. Edwards made to reporters.

They said about a week and we've been here a couple of days so hopefully we'll go home this weekend.

Based on his wife's comments the former Governor must not be feeling too bad.

He's making friends and cutting up. I know he's getting back to himself when he starts doing that.

Edwards was Governor of Louisiana from 1972 to 1980 and again from 1984 to 1996. He was arrested and convicted on charges relating to a casino licensing scheme in 1998. He served 8 years behind bars on that conviction.
