Surprise! Netflix Is Releasing ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ Immediately After the Super Bowl
Excuse me for a moment while I stop hyperventilating; Cloverfield 3 is being released TONIGHT.
For weeks on end we’ve been wondering what in the heck is going on with the third Cloverfield movie. What’s it called? When will it be released? Is it going straight to Netflix? DOES IT EXIST?! Well, tonight Netflix answered all our questions with the most shocking surprise yet – the movie is dropping on Netflix after the Super Bowl. Yes, you read that correctly.
The new movie is called The Cloverfield Paradox – not the best name compared to the rumored God Particle and Cloverfield Station, but whatever –the first trailer dropped during the game on Sunday, it’s a direct sequel to the 2008 movie, and it’s literally arriving immediately after the game.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the near future, a group of international astronauts on a space station are working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth. The experimental technology aboard the station has an unexpected result, leaving the team isolated and fighting for their survival.
The synopsis for the film, which changed since it was originally announced, is ultra mysterious. But based on that trailer, we know the third film in the Clover-verse is a direct sequel to the original Matt Reeves movie and will finally answer the question of where the monster came from. For weeks now, the movie’s ARG (Alternate Reality Game) has been teasing the film, and the energy source mentioned in the comments. See our earlier posts about it to catch up. And did you spot that Slusho! Easter egg in the trailer?
The Cloverfield Paradox‘s release date has been changed a bajillion times by this point. Originally slated to open last February, then last October, then this February, then April 20. Directed by Julius Onah, it follows a crew of U.S. astronauts who make a shocking discovery in space. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (who, by the way, didn’t know this was a Cloverfield film until we told her), David Oyelowo, Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Zhang Ziyi, and Chris O’Dowd.
