A tragic accident at the Cote Blanche salt mine in St. Mary Parish early Wednesday morning has claimed the life of one of its workers.

The man, identified as Michael Charles by our news partners at KATC, was part of a crew performing maintenance when he was fatally injured. After immediately administration of emergency treatment by on-site personnel and first responders, he was transported to Iberia General Hospital, but didn’t survive. Charles was a long-time employee with the North American Salt Company.

Spokesperson Peggy Landon says the company is working with officials to investigate the accident.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to our employee’s family and friends,” said Gord Bull, Cote Blanche mine manager.  “He was a valued employee who had a wonderful sense of humor and was liked by all.  He will be deeply missed by everyone at Cote Blanche mine.”
