Woman Wins Crawfish Eating Contest
NEW ORLEANS, April 10 -- Sonya Thomas, a Korean native livng in Washington, has won the crawfish eating competition at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, organizers of the event said.
Weighing in at a mere 100 pounds, it wasn't easy for Sonya Thomas to win her Crawfish Eating Championship Title, as Baton Rouge native Adrian Morgan forced her into an eat-off at the Rouses World Championship Crawfish Eating Contest Saturday, according to The Times-Picayune.
Thomas and Morgan each slammed down 3 -1/4 pounds of crawfish in 10 minutes, but Thomas beat him in a tiebreaker.
"I'm the seafood champion," Thomas said after the contest.
Her seafood appetite is ravenous. Thomas has set records of eating 44 lobsters in 12 minutes, 26 dozen raw clams in 6 minutes, 46 dozen oysters in 10 minutes and 46 crab cakes in 10 minutes.
Fellow competitor Crazy Legs Conti, who consumed 2 1/4 pounds of mud bugs had nothing but praise for Sonya Thomas.
New Orleans WDSU-TV reporter Travers Mackel won the media round with 3 1/2 pounds eaten, but he was not eligible for the professional-class prizes. Read more here.
