There was a crash on Interstate 10 Thursday afternoon, then a shooting and a brief pursuit by police.

Louisiana State Police have arrested 29-year-old Cahafer Benjamin of Lafayette.

Just before noon on Thursday, Troop I got a call that a crash happened between a truck and car on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in St. Martin Parish.

A caller told troopers both of the cars continued driving down the interstate after the crash happened.

Troopers also found out the driver of the car, Cahafer Benjamin, allegedly fired three shots out of his window, hitting the passenger's side of the truck.

Officers tracked Benjamin's car down a short time later on Highway 347 near Breaux Bridge.

They tried to stop him, but he took off, and he got back on to Interstate 10.

Benjamin finally surrendered on I-10 westbound, but not before troopers saw him throw a gun out of the window.

They found out later, the gun he threw away was a stolen gun.  Benjamin is now facing multiple charges including:

  • Attempted Second Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Flight from an Officer
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Stolen Firearm
