This morning on the KTDY morning show, we talked about why some people simply hate Lafayette.  We love Lafayette, it's where we call home.  Why do some people hate it?

Most of you know about the sports announcer/journalist from Starkville, MS. who lost his job after making derogatory remarks about Lafayette after a visit for a UL baseball game.  He said he couldn't understand us, he drove around the city for over an hour and couldn't find any place he'd lay his hat down to raise a family, etc.  He apologized, but it was too late, the damage was done.

This past weekend, I was at the Lafayette airport picking up friends.  As we exited, there were 2 men behind me who were not very happy about where the bird in the sky had landed them.  One man said, "Welcome to Lafayette or as I like to call it...hell."  The other man responded, "There was a man on the plane that was talking to me and I couldn't understand a thing he said.  I can't understand these swamp people."

Why can we love a place so much and other human beings that have a brain, heart and soul just like the rest of us, hate it.  What are these people seeing that we don't.  These men didn't seem like the party type.  It didn't seem like they would have been better suited for a bigger city.  They seemed quite country-looking to me.  Both over 40.  Both in jeans.  And to me, both had accents.

You guys know me, I wanted to turn around and say a few things but didn't.  And today, I actually regret not doing so.  I want to know what made them say such a thing.  Is there something about Lafayette that's horrible, something I haven't been able to find in almost 30 years of living here?  Could the sports guy have been right?  Were the 2 guys in the airport brilliant enough to see something that my small swamp mind could not?

I see Lafayette, as a wonderful place to live and raise children.  A great place for world-class food.  A community that believes in God, family and helping a fellow man.  Am I missing something?
