Why have visitors from China, Cuba, Pakistan, Mexico, India, and Brazil gathered in Franklin, Louisiana?
They're visiting a sugar mill. It's the end of the crushing season, and the international visitors are visiting the Sterling Sugars mill to learn about a technological advancement that has revolutionized the refining process. The Daily Advertiser reports a device called the Crompion Louisiana Low Turbulence Clarifier was designed by the Audubon Sugar Institute at LSU’s Ag Center. Crompion International built the clarifier for Sterling.
Mill manager Luis Acevedo said, “We’ve been running the plant 24/7, working in shifts now at the end of crushing season. All of this sugar, everything you see here, will be shipped off to Domino.” The clarifier reportedly expedites the process, and produces a purer product. It's been in operation at Sterling for about two years.
