We went to Shucks! in Abbeville with some friends the day after Christmas, and I was lucky enough to get a picture of these guys.

Bert Istre, one of the owners of  Shucks! (he's the guy on the right) tells us that Santa has been stopping at Shucks! for several years now, taking advantage of wonderful Southern hospitality and delicious Cajun food before he heads back to the North Pole.

I asked Bert what Santa usually orders and the answer was:

  • 1 dozen fresh-shucked oysters
  • 1 cup of gumbo
  • 1 "Super Sampler" of char-broiled oysters
  • 1 seafood platter

Some of the kids sitting at a nearby table were sneaking glances over at Santa.  If they only knew who he really was, I am sure that they would have wanted to thank him for the great presents!

I asked Bert if Santa gets preferential treatment at Shucks!, and his reply was

"Santa has been bringing joy to so many kids in Acadiana for so many years, we try to feed him for free, you know, just to show him how much we appreciate him, but he refuses.  Santa told us that it would be payment enough if we are all nice to each other and are always on our best behavior".

Bert also told us a little secret:  Santa sometimes gets to enjoy an ice cold Corona, but only if Mrs. Claus is driving the sled home!
