What was the first thing sold online?  It was long before Amazon.com way back in 1972.

Before the internet was as we know it today, in 1972 it was called 'Arpanet'.  And the first thing purchased online was a bag of weed as revealed in John Markoff's 2005 book, 'What the Dormouse Said:  How the Sixties Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer Industry'.

Students from Stanford University sold a tiny amount of marijuana to some guys from MIT.
