We started playing a new song by the pop group DNCE called 'Cake By The Ocean.' I was eating a piece of cake yesterday and 3 people made a comment about the song when they saw me eating cake. When I asked one of those people what 'cake by the ocean' meant, they said 'I don't know, it's a song.'

Being the curious lad I am, I had to know what, if anything, 'cake by the ocean' meant. I first looked at the lyrics themselves:

Talk to me, baby

I'm going to miss this sweet craving, whoa-oh

Let's lose our minds and go crazy

I-I-I-I-I-I keep on hoping we'll eat cake by the ocean

Walk for me, baby

I'll be Didd and you'll be Naomi, whoa-oh

Let's lose our minds and go crazy

I-I-I-I-I-I keep on hoping we'll eat cake by the ocean.

First of all, you might be wondering like I was: 'who or what is a 'Didd and who is Naomi?' Didd refers to hip hop artist P. Diddy, and Naomi is supermodel Naomi Campbell. Here's what DNCE member Joe Jonas said about the reference:

In the studio we were telling stories and there was this amazing story someone was telling about how Diddy and Naomi have this fascination with each other," Joe tells ABC Radio. "And every time they see each other, apparently Naomi does a catwalk for Diddy. And I was like, 'We gotta put that in the song!'

That explains that, but what about 'cake on the ocean?' Well, that's where things take a little turn towards the PG - 13 side of things. Jonas told MTV

'Working on the record, these Swedish producers that we were working with, they kept confusing ’sex on the beach’ with ’cake by the ocean,’ so that’s how the song started,” Joe explained. “Then, it became this kind of lyrically wacky song, and it kind of embodies the band. It’s funky, it’s fresh, I think it’s something that people can dance to.'

So, there you have it. Not sure how 'cake by the ocean' gets mistaken for 'sex on the beach,' even in Swedish, but then again, I don't know Swedish. To be honest, I really like the song, but didn't pay too much attention to the words.
