UL sophomore catcher Lexie Elkins has 20 home runs

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun softball team, the #6-overall national seed, will be playing host to an NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history this weekend, when they entertain the 11th-seeded Arizona Wildcats at Lamson Park.

If you like the long ball, you're probably going to like this Super Regional, as It's a match-up that will feature the two home run hitting teams in the country.

Arizona, who is 44-14 on the year, is leading the country in home runs, with 106.

The Wildcats feature junior catcher Chelsea Goodacre, who is currently third in the nation, individually, with 22 long balls.

But the Arizona line-up is strong, top to bottom, and also consists of freshman third baseman Katiyana Mauga (19), junior first baseman Hallie Wilson (16), junior shortstop Kellie Fox (14), freshman second baseman Mo Mercado (11), and sophomore third baseman Lauren Young (10), who all have hit double-digit home runs in 2014.

Louisiana, who comes into the Super regional at 47-8-1 on the season, including wins in 39 of their last 42 games, has hit 85 home runs, good enough for second in the country.

The Cajuns are led by sophomore catcher Lexie Elkins, the 2014 Sun belt Conference Player of the Year, who has 20 home runs, good enough to rank her in the top ten in the nation.

Also in the UL line-up is freshman outfielder Hayley Hayden (15), senior outfielder Shelbi Redfearn (15), and sophomore third baseman Samantha Walsh (10), who have also recorded double-digit homers this year.

As you might imagine, because both team hit a lot of home runs, they also score a lot of runs, with Arizona ranking first in the country, with 446, and Louisiana ranked in the top 15, with 368.

Of course, no good line-up is complete without a table-setter at the top of the order, and each of these team have one. Senior Kelsey Rodriguez leads Arizona is hitting, at a .431, while senior second baseman Natalie Fernandez paces Louisiana, at a .434.

With both of these teams averaging more than six runs per game, there should be plenty of fireworks at Lamson Park this week.

For Louisiana, who won the regular season Sun Belt Conference championship, as well as the postseason Sun Belt Conference Tournament title, this is their third-consecutive Super Regional series.

The Cajuns, who last went to the Women's College World Series in 2008, have also been to the Super Regionals in four of the last five years, and five of the last seven.

The Wildcats, out of the Pac-12, have won eight national championships in school history.

Arizona leads the all-time series, 19-3, but Louisiana has gone 2-2 against the Wildcats during the postseason.

The first game of the best-of-three game series is scheduled for Friday night at 8 pm, with the second game slated for Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

If necessary, a third and deciding game would be played on Saturday, approximately 45 minutes following the completion of the 2 pm game.
