Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun softball team dropped their first game in the 2014 Women's College World Series on Thursday night, falling to the Kentucky Wildcats, 4-1, at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

For Louisiana, who came in as the #6-overall national seed, it was only their fourth loss in their last 45 games, while Kentucky, the #14-overall seed, won for the sixth time in their last eight games.

Kentucky got on the board first, scoring an unearned run in the top half of the first inning, when third baseman Nikki Sagermann reached on a two-out error, advanced  to second on a walk to catcher Griffin Joiner, and then scored on a double off the bat first baseman Lauren Cumbess, to give them a 1-0 lead.

Louisiana tied things in the bottom of the first inning, when sophomore catcher Lexie Elkins blasted a two-out solo home run, to knot the score up, 1-1.

As it turned out, that would not only be the last run the Cajuns would score, but only the last hit they would record.

The Wildcats grabbed the lead in the top of the second off of UL starter Christina Hamilton, when second baseman Krystal Smith led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by left-fielder Emily Jolly, and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated player Ginny Carroll, making the score 2-1.

Kentucky extended their lead to 3-1 in the top half of the fourth inning, when Cumbess connected on a solo homer, giiving them a two-run cushion.

The Wildcats pushed across an insurance run in the top of the sixth, courtesy of another unearned run, to give them a 4-1 lead, and the eventual three-run win.

Cumbess led the way for Kentucky, offensively, going 3-for-3, with a double, a home run, and two runs batted in, as the Wildcats outhit the Cajuns, 5-1.

The story of the night was Kentucky starting pitcher Kelsey Nunley (30-9), who tossed a complete game one-hitter, while striking out seven.

Hamilton (29-3) suffered the loss for Louisiana, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while getting tabbed with only her second loss in her last 28 decisions.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 49-14 on the season, while the Cajuns fell to 49-9-1.

Kentucky advances to winners bracket play on Friday at 8:30 pm against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Louisiana falls into the elimination bracket, where they will face the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm.
