Two people are dead and a child is in a Lafayette hospital after a four-wheeler accident early Sunday morning.

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, deputies were called out to the intersection of La. Hwy. 35 and Clint Road at 1:17 a.m. Sunday

Couvillon said that three people on a four-wheeler failed to stop at the intersection and crashed into a ditch. All three passengers were ejected.

Thirty-four-year-old Shawn Lalonde and 29-year-old Kyle Dudding were pronounced dead at the scene, while a juvenile was airlifted to a hospital in Lafayette, where he was last listed in stable condition.

Couvillon said it's possible a "slight incline in the roadway at the intersection of La. Hwy. 35 and Clint Road may have served as a ramp which enabled four wheelers to become airborne across La. Hwy. 35," causing the vehicle to crash into the ditch on the other side.

Routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted to the crime lab for analysis Couvillon said. The crash remains under investigation.
