UPDATE: Four Adults, One Child Dead In Weekend Crashes
A four-year-old is dead after a Rapides Parish crash that police say was alcohol-related. William Antee, 43, of Boyce faces vehicular homicide charges after a utility vehicle crash that killed Mia Castillo of Lufkin, Texas, and injured two other children.
A 22-year-old Lake Charles woman has been charged with vehicular homicide after she got behind the wheel intoxicated and wrecked Sunday night, killing her passenger. Louisiana State Police say Emily Marcantel failed to negotiate a curve and hit a ditch, overturning her vehicle. Although both passengers were unrestrained, 22-year-old Taylor Bellard died at a hospital from injuries suffered in the accident.
Sunday, March 1: Three people are dead and one is in critical condition following three highway crashes this weekend that police say involved high speed, lack of restraint and impairment.
Dustin Cole, 20, of Mamou died Saturday around 2:30 p.m. after overcorrecting and flipping his vehicle on LA Highway 748 west of Highway 363. Cole was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Landry Parish coroner.
Forty-seven-year old Todd Alleman of Scott died around 10 p.m. Saturday after he failed to negotiate a curve and struck a tree on Bergeron Road in Breaux Bridge.
Two Church Point men were involved in another crash early this morning on LA Highway 35 near Noel Road. Curtis Wheeler, 31, died today around 2:45 a.m. after his driver veered off the road at a high rate of speed and hit a culvert, overturning the vehicle and ejecting the two passengers. The driver, 25-year-old Brandon Wheeler, is in critical condition and faces vehicular homicide charges.
Police say all four people involved in the crashes were unrestrained and traveling at high speeds. Alcohol is suspected in the three crashes, although toxicology results are pending.
LSP urges travelers and Mardi Gras revelers to avoid impaired driving and to always wear a seat belt.
"Proper restraint use allows crash forces to be spread out across the body," said LSP spokesperson Trooper Stephen Hammons. "While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes."
