Apparently, no one with Michele Bachmann's presidential campaign checked into getting clearance to use Tom Petty's song "American Girl", and Petty is reportedly not happy about it. This isn't the first time a political entity has angered Petty by using his music without permission. Yahoo News reports George W Bush's reelelection campaign used Petty's "I Won't Back Down". Petty's management sent a cease and desist letter to the Bush camp and reportedly will send one to the Bachmann campaign.  In 2008 John McCain found himself  in a very awkward position, publicly apologiging for the unauthorized use of Jackson Browne's 'Running On Empty".  The Reagan administration embraced Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" as a patriotic anthem. If you listen to the lyrics, it's anything but.  I saw a TV interview where "The Boss" mused upon the irony.  I have a tip for campaigners.. DO Your Homework.
