As a life-long comic book fan, I can tell you that new characters taking up the names of existing heroes is as common and frequent as athletes switching teams each season. Both of the 'Big Two' comic book publishers, DC Comics and Marvel Comics, often make these changes to boost sales or get media attention.

It's Marvel's turn in the spotlight as they announce a change to Thor, best known to general audiences from his two solo films and his role in the hugely-popular 'Marvel's The Avengers.' Thor is only been able to use his powers if he remains worthy of them, and now it appears that due to some future unworthiness, Thor will lose the job and a woman will take over.

Says Marvel editor Will Moss, 'The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!'
