Teen Who Needs Heart Transplant May Be Denied
A 15-year-old boy in Georgia’s DeKalb County needs a heart transplant, but his family says he’s being turned down because he has low grades.
Doctors for Anthony Stokes say he is not on the transplant list because he has a “history of noncompliance.” His mother said, “They said they don’t have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups.”
However, family friends claim doctors are just using the noncompliance line as a smoke screen “because Anthony has had low grades and trouble with the law.”
The hospital where Stokes has been receiving treatment continues to look into ways to help him. He has less than six months to live and has been in the hospital since July 14.
What do you think? Should Stokes be denied? Or should his past problems have nothing to do with his health?
8/14/13 Anthony Stokes has been placed on the transplant list, awaiting a donor heart. He remains hospitalized.
