Taxpayers Upset Over Paying Security Bill for Whitney Houston’s Funeral

Taxpayers in Newark, N.J. are not too happy to learn that they will have to pay the bill for extra security that was provided for Whitney Houston‘s funeral last February. According to CBS 2, the city racked up $187,000 in police overtime during the pop icon’s funeral service.

While Newark residents say they love Nippy, some don’t think they should have to foot the bill since people in the community are strapped for cash. “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous when you have people who are unemployed and homeless,” said resident Quincy Ruffin. “If they (the Houston Family) wanted it to go that far, do that much, they should have been the ones providing (security) for it.”

Others were more upset by the fact that the public wasn’t allowed to attend the Feb. 18 service, which drew such celebrities as Alicia Keys, Kevin Costner, R. Kelly, Tyler Perry and Stevie Wonder. “I think it was a waste of time and then now we find out what happened and how she actually died, it makes you think twice saying was it worth it or not,” said resident Minerva DelValle.

But N.J. councilwoman Mildred Crump contends that extra security was needed to ensure public safety. “If they (security) had not been there someone may have been trampled, seriously hurt,” she says.
