Researchers used genetic sequencing to determine that armadillos are responsible for about a third of the leprosy cases in the U.S. 150 to 250 people in America contract the disease each year. It causes skin lesions and can lead to permanent nerve damage or even death if not treated quickly. Most of the armadillo-related cases happen in Louisiana and Texas.
