I watched Saints head coach Sean Payton's 'Black Monday" press conference until the questions became repetitive. He was characteristically tight lipped about the future of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The coach had just come from a team meeting, and said he would meet with veteran players after the presser.
Expectations were high for the New Orleans Saints this year. There was a lot of talk about a Super Bowl run, and speculation this could be the best Saints team ever. They sure looked a lot better on paper than they did on the field.
It's the Christmas season, time to be with the special people in our lives. I've traveled to Virginia to spend some time with my mother and sister, neither of whom are passionate football fans. Mom was a pretty good sport about watching the Saints on Monday Night Football.
The demons are at work! The Saints are fighting for a division title and home playoff game despite a sub .500 record. Years ago, a voodoo priestess was brought in to exorcise the the evil spirits in the Superdome that brought playoff futility. It apparently worked. I was there, so I thought why not do the same thing here?
I read a quote years ago, from then Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, "When you're winnin', you walk on water. When the team's not playin' well, they want to hang you from the nearest tree." That's the life of an NFL quarterback.
Most NFL fans know Mike Ditka as an ESPN analyst who once coached the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl championship. Saints fans remember him for trading away an entire draft to select Texas running back Ricky Williams and posing with him for a mock wedding portrait on the cover of ESPN The Magazine. Ditka does a column with the Chicago Sun Times. The Hall of Fame tight end shared some thoughts on the recent gesture by several St. Louis Rams players, as well as the whole Ferguson situation.
Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice's indefinite suspension was overturned by an arbitrator on Friday. He is now free to sign with any team that will have him. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, 4 teams have shown interest, including the New Orleans Saints.
