National Night Out (Against Crime) is October 6th, 2015, and the Youngsville Police Department invites you to Sugar Mill Pond from 5-7pm to learn more about how to stay safe.

National Night Out is an annual public event to build relationships between local, regional and federal law enforcement, fire and community services and the local community.  The goal of the event is to make neighborhoods safer, making them better places to live.

I recently spoke with Youngsville Chief of Police Rickey Boudreaux about some of the problems facing our community, and found out that Youngsville was not unlike other communities in Acadiana.  Youngsville is experiencing crimes like drug sale/use, theft, burglaries, etc; the same crimes that are affecting other areas.

He also told me this: just like he was speaking with me, a member of the media, he will gladly sit with any resident to talk about his department, what is happening in Youngsville, and what we can do to work with the police department to make our neighborhoods safer.

Chief Boudreaux also told me one simple, very effective way to reduce crime in my neighborhood:  lock my car doors, and encourage my neighbors to do the same.  He said that many of the thieves that canvass neighborhoods lately are simply trying car door handles to see if they are locked.  If not, they pilfer through the vehicle and swipe whatever is of value.  If the cars are locked, they make their way to the next driveway to try their luck.

Watch this video for Chief Boudreaux's invitation to you to attend the event!
