A substitute bus driver for the Lafayette Parish School System has been suspended while school system officials investigate a situation where a 10-year-old girl was left on a bus Monday afternoon.

The little girl fell asleep on the bus, and she woke up and began walking around the parkling lot of a grocery store where the bus had been parked to run a personal errand.

Due to the incident, Lafayette bus drivers will now have to take more steps to make sure there are no students ever left on a bus.

Transportation Director for the school system, Damon Evans, says bus drivers are now required to walk through the bus after each school stop before they start their next route ensuring they are checking the bus multiple times before they are done with their bus route.

A neighbor called the child's parent after noticing the girl walking around.

The driver who left the child on the bus has now been suspended for twenty days while the investigation continues.
