Besides "Did you have a nice Christmas?" the next most popular question you'll hear being asked today is " When is it going to get colder?". Be careful what you ask for because Mother Nature is winding up a  pretty strong punch that she'll deliver across our state on Sunday.

Temperatures across much of Louisiana this morning are in the middle 70's. For most of the state a high temperature at or above 80 degrees will not be uncommon. Those warmer temperatures will start to evaporate beginning Sunday when a strong cold front begins to push into and through the state.

The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a slight risk of severe weather for the entire state of Louisiana during the day on Sunday. The greatest threat will be in the form of strong thunderstorms and very gusty winds. Many of  these storms will have brief heavy downpours and depending upon their forward motion could produce some localized flooding.

A cold front currently situated across the middle of the country will move into northwest Louisiana during the day on Sunday. This will most likely be proceeded by a developing squall line of storms ahead of the frontal boundary. The system will push eastward across the state eventually exiting southeast Louisiana in the early morning hours of Monday.

Temperatures across the region have been running 20 - 30 degrees above seasonal norms. Those temperatures will return quickly to more seasonable readings with the passage of the frontal system. Cooler, more seasonable temperatures are expected to remain in the area through New Year's Day.
