A tropical depression or storm can be fun if you decide to stay home and stay safe. There are hurricane parties and getting a few days off to spend with the family. A major hurricane, on the other hand, is a very different story. My parents didn't believe in leaving when I was a kid, so we "weathered" a few big storms at home, the biggest and worst of which was Hurricane Andrew. I was terrified throughout the entire ordeal and hoped never to experience anything similar again.

Now that I have children of my own, I don't want to expose them to the possibly traumatic experience of sitting through a major hurricane. My wife and I have decided we'll evacuate if we're in the cross-hairs of a Category 2 storm or greater. Our concern is not just for our bodily health, but for the mental and emotional well-being of ourselves and our children.

Some people decide to stay home for a major storm regardless of the possible dangers. What decision do you make for your family and at what point do you make it? Let us know on Facebook!
