A Louisiana State trooper, Steven Vincent has died after being shot during a traffic stop near Bell City.

Vincent leaves behind a wife and a nine-year-old son.

Troop D Public Information Officer Sgt. James Anderson says the trooper was responding to a vehicle that was in a ditch on La. Highway 14 near Fruge Road in Calcasieu Parish.

As a struggle ensued, the driver, 54-year-old Kevin Daigle, allegedly shot the trooper in the head.

Head of Louisiana State Police Col. Michael Edmonson said the driver, who was suspected to be impaired, was detained by passing motorists while other citizens aided Vincent until medical assistance arrived on the scene.

The trooper died at a Lake Charles hospital.

Governor Bobby Jindal has issued an Executive Order that all flags at state facilities to be flown at half staff until this Friday, August 28.

Governor Jindal said,

 

“Supriya and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Trooper Steven Vincent. Steven was an honorable husband, father and State Trooper who courageously served our state for over a decade.

Brave men and women like Steven put their lives in danger every day to protect our families, and we are extremely grateful to them for keeping us safe.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Steven's family and all of our law enforcement members as we mourn this tragic loss.”
