One of the reasons schools have athletic programs is to offer an extended education that goes beyond the classroom. Sports are meant to teach student-athletes the benefits of preparation and practice. They also should illustrate the importance of teamwork and how to develop synergistically strong relationships.

Sports should also teach the importance of respect for self, others, and the institution the athletic teams represent. None of that happened Monday night at a St. Mary Parish middle school basketball game.

The incident in question happened on Monday night at B. Edward Boudreaux Middle School in Baldwin. St. Mary Parish Deputies say a fight broke out between players from Boudreaux Middle and Morgan City Junior High at mid-court during the middle of the game. The physical violence then escalated into the bleachers.

St. Mary Parish Deputies are asking that anyone who was in attendance at the game or who has a video of the altercation that took place during the game to please come forward.  This evidence will aid law enforcement in determining exactly what happened and what the consequences for those actions should be.
