St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier announced his resignation during the parish's Administrative/Finance committee meeting last night.

In a press release, Cormier said he would be leaving office on March 2, 2018.

Cormier has been Parish President since 2004 when he won a special election to fill the seat resigned by Scott Angelle. He would go on to win re-elections in 2007, 2011 and 2015 without opposition.

In 2016, Cormier was selected by fellow parish presidents, police jurors and parish council members statewide to serve as President of the Police Jury Association of Louisiana.

"It has been a great honor to have served the citizens of St. Martin Parish for the past 18 years," Cormier said. "I am proud of the work that the council and administration have done collectively to make St. Martin Parish Government more transparent, responsive and accountable to our constituents and businesses."

Cormier will remain involved in parish governmental affairs though, as he will join the staff of the Police Jury Association of Louisiana. He will be leading governmental and legislative affairs as well as assist the Executive Director in daily operations.

A special election will be held later this year to fill the vacancy. Until then, the Parish President position will be filled by appointment fifteen days after the vacancy occurs. The appointment will be made by a favorable vote of the majority of the parish council.

The next available election date is November 7th, which is when municipal, school board and congressional races will be held in St. Martin Parish.
