St Joseph Tap Water Showing Signs Of Improvement
ST. JOSEPH, La. (AP) — A Louisiana health department spokesman says tap water in the town of St. Joseph is back from murky brown to the pale yellow that has been usual there, and officials are working to make it clear.
Bob Johannessen says the water turned brown after a water main broke in January. He says the break drained the system, and water pouring back in after it was fixed stirred up sediment from oxidated iron.
He says the yellow color is from untreated iron in the aquifer that supplies the water.
A department statement says a December inspection found problems including poor filtration and lack of enough valves to properly isolate water leaks. It says tests in September, November and December did not find bacteria used to indicate possible contamination.
