Talented performers, elaborate costumes and dazzling visual effects highlighted the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics on Sunday in Sochi, Russia. The oft-maligned host nation even took time to laugh at itself during the farewell show.

As dancers formed into a representation of the Olympic rings, one group remained in a tight circle echoing a glitch that marred the opening ceremonies when one of the five lighted rings failed to open.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose nation spent $51 billion to host the event, watched in delight as the Sochi Games closed with his country on top of the overall medal standings. Russia transferred the host responsibilities for the Winter Olympics to Pyeongchang, South Korea, site of the 2018 Games.
