Shawn Mendes' latest admission implies his chance at big-screen stardom was marred due to bad timing.

While promoting the release of his newest single, "In My Blood," on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show Thursday (March 22), the 19-year-old spoke of how he decided to treat himself to a screening of Love, Simon just hours before the song's big premiere.

When asked what he thought of the film, Mendes said he believed it was an "incredible movie," which then prompted Duran to quiz the crooner on the lesser-known rumors that indicated he nearly auditioned the titular role in the gay teen romance flick himself.

"You were actually either being considered for or considered auditioning for the role in Love, Simon?" Duran inquired, speaking to Mendes' shot at playing the lead role as Simon Spier in the film based on Beck Albertalli's young adult novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.

"Oh yeah, I was," Mendes confirmed before explaining the reason why he couldn't follow through on the opportunity. "Unfortunately, timing didn't work out. It would have been amazing!"

Love, Simon, which features Nick Robinson as the title part, concentrates on a closeted 17-year-old high school student who is forced to come out as gay to his friends and family after being blackmailed by one of his peers. The film broke boundaries upon its March 16 premiere by becoming the first movie released by a major studio to highlight a gay protagonist.

While the prospect certainly could have been his big movie breakthrough, the "Treat You Better" musician maintains that Robinson's portrayal in the film was incredible.
