A new state law prohibiting drivers from using cell phones in school zones can’t be enforced yet, at least in Lafayette.

We haven't had that discussion quite yet.

The law requires signage posting the ban before law enforcement can issue a fine, but the signs have to be installed by the school districts.

"We haven't had that discussion quite yet," said Angela Morrison, director of Community Collaborations and Partnerships with the Lafayette Parish School System. She says the district will comply once the law is addressed by both law enforcement and the school district.

State police spokesperson Brooks David says the law won’t be enforced until school districts have time to purchase the signs.
