What began as a domestic dispute in a vehicle earned one Church Point man six counts of attempted murder.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux said on Aug. 3, deputies responded to a call of shots fired on Miller Road near Opelousas.

Investigators determined the suspect, 34-year-old Joseph Thomas Jr., and a female victim were engaged in an argument while in a vehicle. The woman exited the vehicle and began walking on the roadside when an acquaintance stopped to give her a ride.

That's when Thomas exited his vehicle and began firing upon the Good Samaritan's vehicle. The car-- which was struck on the driver's door-- included the driver, the victim, three infants and one teenager on board.

Robert then followed the woman home and quickly sped off before officers located him later to make an arrest.

Thomas was booked into the St. Landry Parish jail on the following charges

  • Six counts of Attempted Second-Degree Murder
  • Simple Criminal Damage to Property

Robert's bond has been set at $650,000.
