Tesla, the groundbreaking electric car maker will share its patented technology for free. The head of the company, Elon Musk made the announcement on Thursday. The company, shose stock has been soaring for the past year and a half is way ahead of other manufacturers in charging technology, and has pioneered the development of less expensive, smaller batteries. The Tesla Model S is a big hit with performance car enthusiasts, particularly in California, where carbon emissions are the worst in the country. The Model S can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Why would Musk share proprietary technology with his competition? He wants the electric car market to grow.

“I don’t think people quite appreciate the gravity of what is going on [with regard to global warming] or just how much inertia the climate has. We really need to do something. It would be shortsighted if we try to hold these things close to our vest.”         - Elon Musk

He added, further innovation will keep his company ahead of its rivals, thereby retaining its competitive edge.
