FAT CATS (AND DOGS)

The obesity epidemic in America isn’t limited to humans- it’s affecting our pets too! According to research, half of pet dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight. Experts say our pets’ weight troubles mirror our own- pets are fed too much and don’t get enough exercise.  Most pet owners aren’t even aware of the many health problems associated with weight gain in animals, but serious risks include arthritis, cancer, diabetes and kidney failure.  But efforts are being made to combat pet obesity.  Veterinarians are researching medical technology to address the issue, but there are things owners can do to help as well, like being careful not to over-feed their animals, putting them on special diets and making sure to take them on plenty of long walks.  No, tying your pet to the treadmill is probably NOT a good idea.
