My husband and I spent our vacation this year in Alaska. It was kind of a bucket list trip for us- we've dreamed, planned, and saved for it for a long time. We visited Fairbanks, Anchorage, and several points in between. One of the highlights was watching the Iditarod. This race commemorates the lifesaving serum run from Anchorage to Nome in 1925. During the ceremonial start of the Iditarod (kind of like a parade,) people who were the highest bidders (Iditariders) get to ride along with he mushers during the trek through downtown Anchorage. The run was shortened from eleven miles to three, due to low snow this season, but the riders all seemed to be having the time of their lives! This video shows musher Nicolas Petit and his team, plus Iditarider Julie Amaro as they sail down 4th Avenue in Anchorage on March 5, 2016.
