On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting oil spill was the largest in US history, reportedly more than 4 million barrels. The rig was contracted to oil giant BP by Transocean Drilling. BP spent 60 billion dollars in settlements and cleanup costs in the US. More than 10 billion went to fishermen, and other concerns affected by the disaster. Buzzfeed reports, a settlement was reached with the Mexican government earlier this year. BP reportedly paid $25 million to be absolved of all responsibility for the spill. None of the money was paid to Mexican citizens affected by the disaster.
