Lafayette Parish residents will soon be able to see how the school board spends its money without poring over financial statements.

Lafayette School Board member Justin Centanni joined Acadiana's Morning News with Rob & Bernie to discuss a new initiative to show Lafayette Parish residents where the school system's funding is actually going. The idea for an online checkbook was mulled over by the Louisiana Legislature, but the measure was killed at the State Capitol.  That measure followed a similar plan from Ohio. Centanni said it was these moves that led the board to the idea.

Though the idea of the digital checkbook is to improve financial transparency for the school district, Centanni said it may also prove to be a cost-cutting measure in the long run.
