Louisiana Treasurer John Kennedy says the state's unclaimed property program returned more money to people last fiscal year than any in the 41-year-old program's history.
Kennedy says the program returned $31 million dollars to more than 25,000 people in the fiscal year that ended June 30.
The Unclaimed property program encompasses old savings or checking accounts, payroll checks, stock proceeds, insurance proceeds, oil and gas royalties, tax refunds,  and other proceeds that are owed but haven't been claimed.
businesses turn the money over to the state when they're unable to locate the individuals in question.
Kennedy says, despite the record year, $575 million dollars remain unclaimed.
