Lafayette High and world renowned pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis will maintain his high school eligibility after he competes in the elite pole vaulting division at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

This morning, the LHSAA issued a one-time waiver of bylaw 6.1.3 in the LHSAA handbook.

The decision ends a period of heavy criticism towards the LHSAA for utilizing a rule of that prohibits an athlete from competing at an elite level for or against an independent team once a member of a high school team, despite the fact that Duplantis competed in the Texas Relays last year.

Duplantis, a senior at LHS, and his family joined Mike "The Bandit" Bernard on ESPN1420 Sunday morning, stating their desire for Duplantis to compete for Lafayette High this season, and wanted to compete against his idol Renaud Lavillenie, a world renowned pole vaulter himself, at the Texas Relays.

Last year at the relays, Duplantis set a world junior record with a 19-4.25 jump. (watch video of him setting the record here)

The decision by the LHSAA and executive director Eddie Bonine to grant the waiver should be applauded.

The elite pole vaulting division at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays begin next Wednesday.
