The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that legendary comedian David Brenner has died.

Brenner, who appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson more than any other guest, has died at the age of 78.  His website says he lost his battle with cancer.

He first appeared on The Tonight Show in 1971 and went on to actually host the the show 75 times.  He authored five books and played himself in 2010 in the ABC hit show Modern Family.  Brenner headlined in Las Vegas in 2012 and for years was a regular on many major talk shows.

David Brenner made his debut on June 9, 1969 at the Improv in New York.  Ironically, he was the last comedian to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show and the first to perform on Late Night With David Letterman, which is filmed in the Ed Sullivan theatre.

As a kid, I remember staying up late and watching David Brenner on The Tonight Show.  I remember thinking he had a large nose and kind of a strange voice, but he always made me laugh.  Always.  And that's why he is one of the greats.
