A pedestrian dies in a car crash Saturday night that La. State Police say happened shortly before midnight on Saturday on La. Highway 358 near Breaux Road in St. Landry Parish.

Trooper Colonel Michael Edmonson says the victim was wearing dark clothing while walking east on the highway in the eastbound lane, when for reasons still under investigation, 34-year-old Kay Gaspard of Opelousas hit the victim with her truck from behind. Gaspard, who did have her seatbelt on, was not injured. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner.

Routine toxicology samples have been taken and will be examined by the State Police Crime Lab. No charges have been filed as of yet.

Louisiana State Law requires that all pedestrians walk on sidewalks when provided.  If no sidewalk is provided the law requires pedestrians walk as far to the left side of the road as possible against the flow of traffic.  Troopers also remind pedestrians that wearing light colored or reflective clothing will increase your chances of being seen by motorists.
