UPDATE: Police Identify Victim In California Street Shooting

UPDATE 6 p.m. The Lafayette Police Department has identified the man shot dead on California Street Sunday night as 46-year-old Ramsey Demouchet of Lafayette.

ORIGINAL. Last night Lafayette Police were called out to the 200 block of California Street after a shooting happened.  Lafayette Police found a 46-year-old man from Lafayette dead in the backyard.

Police say the shooter told them he saw someone going into his home from across the street without his permission.  The homeowner allegedly armed himself with a gun and went there to check out what was happening at his home.

He says once he was there, he confronted the alleged burglar through a window, and he fired two shots at him.

Police say the victim left the home, the homeowner fired two more shots at the victim, and the victim ran to the backyard.

The homeowner went back to his house and called police.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has not been identified, and police say they are continuing to investigate the situation at this time.
