If you are a property owner in Lafayette Parish, you will be getting a break on your taxes this year.

The Lafayette City Parish Council voted to suspend the collection of the 0.94-mill Public Health Unit tax for property owners this year.

The council also voted to reduce the amount of mills collected for the mosquito abatement program from 1.5 mills to 0.5 mills.

Since both of the property taxes bring in way more money to support each program, the council decided this year to make those change.

A surplus of $13.4 million has been collected over and above what is needed for each program.  The extra money means both programs will be funded over the next year even though the taxes have been cut.

Both taxes are expected to be restored to their usual levels next year.
