Lafayette Police say one of their officers was injured early this morning while they were trying to take a suspect into custody.

The incident started at around 1:20 this morning when police were called out to a disturbance at a home in the 100 block of Noel Drive between family members.

Police say one of the witnesses told them 37-year-old Jennifer Shanahan took off in her car.

They found her a short time later sitting in her car which was on a parking lot in the 3300 block of Johnston Street.

Officers have Shanahan repeated commands to get out of the car, but instead she drove off of the lot and back to the 100 block of Noel Drive.

She parked in the street, and again, officers gave her multiple commands to get out of the car. That's when police say that Shanahan put her car in reverse and accelerated.

Her car hit one the officer and the police cruiser parked behind Shanahan's car.

They removed Shanahan from the car.

Shanahan is facing the following charges:

  • Attempted 1st Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Flight From an Officer
  • Resisting an Officer
  • OWI
  • Failure to Appear warrant for Unauthorized Entry of an Inhabited Dwelling

The officer was treated and released from a local hospital.

The case remains under investigation.
