The Lafayette City Parish Council has voted in favor of a proposal that allows a nonprofit group to take over the development, fundraising and management responsibilities for the central on Johnston Street known as the Horse Farm.

Lafayette government bought the land last year from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in order to create a central park for the city on the site.

The plan all along was to hand the management of the property over to a nonprofit group.  The group, Lafayette Central Park Inc, was formed earlier this year to lease the property for consolidated government in order to oversee development of the park at the Horse Farm.

City-Parish President Joey Durel says turning it over to a nonprofit group will likely make it easier for them to raise money than local government.
