Discussion of a measure to allow the sale of medical marijuana in Louisiana was expected to be brief. Debate went on longer than expected Wednesday, but a house committee approved the bill. If it passes the full legislature, the measure will allow the establishment of stores where people with a doctor's prescription will be able to purchase marijuana derivatives for medical use. The Advocate reports, the use of medical marijuana has been legal since the 1990's, but there have been no provisions for Louisiana residents to purchase it.
