Louisiana State Police Trooper Donald C. Cleveland was gunned down 36 years ago during a traffic stop on La. Highway 94.

The highway has been renamed in his honor. It's now the Trooper Donald C. Cleveland Memorial Highway.  A special ceremony was held Thursday near the Lafayette-St.Martin Parish line.

Gov. Bobby Jindal signed House Bill 171 into law during the 2013 legislative session, officially renaming the highway.

Dalton Prejean, of Lafayette, was convicted of the trooper's murder. Prejean was executed in 1990.

Numerous law enforcement officers, state and local officials,  friends and family were on hand for Thursday's formal dedication.
